Sample 1: Inviting someone to be a part of your job search network if you’re unemployed.
SUBJECT: I would like to know if you can help Dear [first name], I've begun to explore new career opportunities and would like your help. I’d like to send you an occasional e-mail describing a job or company I’m interested in. If you know anyone there or can tell me more about the company, it would be very helpful. Of course, I'm happy to do the same for you if you’re interested. If you're willing to help, please add my e-mail address to your approved senders list. You will have the opportunity to opt -out of my e-mails at any time. If you do not wish to receive any more e-mails from me, reply to this message with “No Thanks” in the subject line, and I’ll take you off of my list. You might be interested in a book that has inspired me to take an active role in managing my career. Sample 2: Inviting someone to be part of your job search network if you’re still employed.

Sample 3: Asking a connection to be your champion.
SUBJECT: Do you know anyone at [Company Name]? Dear [first name], As you may recall, I am actively seeking a new position. There is a [position name] opening at your company for which I believe I'm very well qualified. I'm not sure who the hiring manager is. Would you be willing to help me locate the hiring manager and send my resume directly to him? This will ensure that it does not get lost among the other applicants. Please reply to this e-mail and let me know if you can help. I'm not sure how much longer this position will be open so your quickest response would be greatly appreciated. By the way, if you're ever in the market for a new position I strongly recommend reading “The Market for Me,” which you can download here: http://www.MarketForMeBook.com. Sample 4: Requesting help from a LinkedIn connection.
I’m considering applying for the position of [position name] at your company. I was wondering if you are familiar with that position, could put me in touch with someone who is, such as the hiring manager. Please reply to this message with your answer or e-mail me directly at [your e-mail address]. Your quickest response would be greatly appreciated.
Sample 5: LinkedIn connection request.
I’m considering applying for the position of [position] at your company. I see that you currently hold a similar position. Are you open to telling me a little more about the position? I was also hoping you would tell me how to submit my resume directly to the hiring manager to avoid getting lost in the shuffle. Please reply to this message with your answer or e-mail me directly at [your e-mail address]. Your quickest response would be greatly appreciated.
Sample 6: Finding a champion using your network.
SUBJECT: Do you know anyone at [Company Name]? Dear [first name], As you may recall, I am actively seeking a new position. There is an opening for [position] at [company] for which I believe I'm very well qualified. Do you know anyone at [company] who may be able to tell me more about the position and the company? If so, please tell me how I can contact them. Please reply to this e-mail and let me know if you can help. I'm not sure how much longer this position will be open so your quickest response would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, [your name] [e-mail address] [phone number] P.S. Sample 7: Sending information about you to a champion.
SUBJECT: Some information about my qualifications Dear Tom, Thanks for offering to help. I’m interested in the position [position]. Do you know the hiring manager? If not, can you put me in touch with anyone in that group? I’ve got seven years of experience in a full-service CPA firm with steadily increasing responsibility. I’m great with small and medium-sized business owners. I want to become a partner in a smaller CPA firm and I’m willing to put in the time. My resume is attached. Let me know if I can be of any help to you. Sincerely, [your name] [email address] [phone number]
Sample 8: Finding contacts at a target company.
SUBJECT: Do you know anyone at [Company Name]? Dear [first name], Thank you for your help with my job search. I am looking for contacts at [Company Name] for an informational interview. Do you know anyone there who might be willing to talk to me? Best regards, [your name] [e-mail address] [phone number] P.S. Sample 9: Submitting through a champion.

Sample 10: Following up with your champion.
SUBJECT: Did you get my resume and cover letter? Dear [first name], Just wanted to be sure you got the resume and cover letter I sent for the [position] role. Let me know immediately if you didn’t get it and I’ll resend it right away. Thanks again for your help on this. I’m eager to hear any news you have. Sincerely, [your name] [email address] [phone number]
Sample 11: Follow-up with Hiring Manager.
SUBJECT: Confirmation of receipt of resume of [your name] Dear [first name or “Hiring Manager”], I submitted my resume and cover letter by email for the position of [position] on [date of submission] and have not received a confirmation that you received these. If you did not get these, please let me know as soon as possible.I’m happy to send the information again. I’m available for a phone conversation any day this week, and welcome a call from you at [phone number]. Sincerely, [your name] [email address] [phone number]
Sample 12: What to say when you don’t get the interview.
SUBJECT: Thank you for your consideration Dear [first name], I’m sorry to hear that I won’t be considered for [position], but I appreciate your response. I have an extensive network helping me to locate opportunities, and I know they could help you find qualified candidates for positions you may have now or in the future. I would like to send you an occasional e-mail detailing companies I am pursuing. If you know someone at that company, I ask that you connect me to help me with my research on the position. In return, I can share any job postings you have with my network. You will find that I have access to qualified individuals that you will not find through job boards or recruiters. Of course, I will stop sending you e-mail anytime you request it. Simply reply to this e-mail and let me know if you’d like me to help you spread the word about your openings. Sample 13: What to send when you don’t get the offer.
SUBJECT: Thank you for your time and consideration Dear [first name], I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t find me to be a match for [position]. I very much appreciate your time [and the time of the others who I spoke to]. I welcome any feedback you may have on my presentation that would help me with future interviews. On a separate note, I have an extensive network helping me to locate opportunities, and I know they could help you find qualified candidates for positions you may have now or in the future. I would like to send you an occasional e-mail detailing companies I am pursuing. If you know someone at that company, I ask that you connect me to help me with my research on the position. In return, I can share any job postings you have with my network. You will find that I have access to qualified individuals that you will not find through job boards or recruiters.
